III Research suggests that there is a total of million dogs in the world. The United States has the largest population of dogs, but France is a close second.

IV Like human fingerprints, dog nose prints are unique to each animal. V While dogs can learn spoken commands, they tend to process the information better if the word is paired with a specific and identifiable hand movement.

VI Dogs have enhanced vision in that they can see well in low light. While they also see in color, their range is very limited. I Whether youre a dog person or a cat person, dogs have a longer history as a domestic companion.

Dogs have lived among humans for 14, years, while cats have only lived as domestic companions for 7, To give you an idea of how low that is, imagine a drop of water in an Olympic-sized pool.

This revelation proves just how ancient the red giant is. Billions of years ago, the universe barely had any metals. The first stars, called Population III, were composed of helium and hydrogen and had a short lifespan.

III When stars reach the end of their lives, they go into majestic supernova explosions, ejecting parts of their bodies out into the galaxy, later forming into new stars.

As such, a stars metal composition is reliable in determining its age. Based on the metal present in the sun, scientists are able to identify that it has been burning for , generations from the Big Bang.

IV Before the discovery of the red giant, the star that held the record for the lowest iron content was 2MASS J B another super-creative name.

This stars metal content was 11, times lower than that of the sun. V When a star goes into a supernova, it triggers a bunch of nuclear reactions that create new elements.

However, the red giant does not seem to contain any of these elements. Scientists believe that a now-dead star went into a supernova, captured back some of its elements, but lost the iron which became part of the red giant.

It is almost at the end of its life, though, and it is now running low on hydrogen. Once it runs out, it will shift to helium fusion.

I A previously unknown aspect of gold has been discovered, and scientists are excited about it. Apparently, when gold is exposed to crushing levels of pressure very quickly, its atomic structure is altered.

For a split second, its properties become similar to other metals that are more compact than gold. This discovery opens new doors to understanding the behavior of elements when exposed to pressure.

II Gold was formerly believed to remain stable despite extremely high pressure. Its atoms are arranged following a face-centered cubic fcc composition.

As the name suggests, these atoms are arranged in cubes. The cubes center, as well as its corners, all contain one atom.

This structure is similar to that of silver, aluminum, nickel, and platinum. In previous experiments, the structure maintains its stability despite being exposed to high pressure.

III In the most recent experiment, scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory discovered that golds composition is altered under shock compression at gigapascals or GPa this is 2.

The specimens composition changed into a looser body-centered cubic structure bcc. IV Body-centered cubic structures differ from face-centered cubic structures in that they have only one atom in the center of the cube.

This structure is present in softer elements like sodium and lithium, as well as tougher elements like chromium and tungsten.

The transition from fcc to bcc is commonly found in metals used in steel manufacturing, and apparently, in gold as well.

V At GPa, the gold specimen began to melt. When exposed to GPa, almost the same level of pressure found at the center of the Earth, the gold turned into liquid.

Golds transformation at this GPa level has never been observed before. VI Why is this discovery significant?

Well, this new finding means a lot to the manufacturing industry. It is important to identify how metals react to a change in temperature and pressure.

For instance, knowing that higher temperature fcc iron is more absorbent of carbon than lower temperature bcc is critical to steel manufacturing.

I Today, millions of people around the globe do not have access to clean water. Fortunately, scientists have been able to invent a groundbreaking method to transform seawater into potable water.

The idea came from the traditional process of heating water and catching its sodium-free steam. II The method is powered by solar energy, so no electricity is required.

However, the process will fail if the thermal materials are blocked by salt crystals. To deal with the problem, salt crystals are eliminated early in the filtration system.

This increases the efficiency and effectivity of the whole process. The result is affordable and practical desalination.

III As the desalination occurs, the salt crystals are expelled towards the filtration discs edges. In a day, the device can produce 6 to 8 liters of potable water per square meter.

Chemical engineer Xiwang Zhang from Monash University, Australia, explained that this discovery could serve as the starting point for future studies on how to provide clean and safe drinking water.

IV Another purification method was discovered in by a group of American scientists. The technique uses a solar-powered and hydrogel-based material that eliminates salt from seawater.

It is so effective that it can purify water from the Dead Sea. The next step is to increase the amount of water these devices can desalinate per day.

I Perus ever-increasing population is challenged by its insanely arid dry seasons. Fortunately, researchers re-discovered an old technique for conserving water.

They stored the water for long periods of time, giving themselves ample supply in the dry season. II Ancient Peruvians created canals and ponds to change the path of water.

This was necessary because Lima Perus capital doesnt have regular access to clean water. While water is abundant during rainy seasons, long droughts are common.

Researchers are now looking into reviving the old systems to address water shortages in Peru. I You probably know by now that using the infamous FaceApp the app that took the world by storm a few months ago allows its owners, a Russian company called Wireless Lab, to basically do whatever they want with your photos.

By merely signing up and using the face-altering application, you are consenting to Wireless Lab posting humiliating versions of your face on social media and even billboards.

II However, experts have explained that while all of this is technically true, it is highly unlikely the company will actually dupe its users.

The real value for the company is in the development of facial recognition software. Additionally, Wireless Lab has announced that photos are temporarily stored in American servers, with most deleted after 48 hours of their upload.

Using AI technology called a neural network, the software is able to modify a persons face without filters. The algorithms in the app can make you look younger or older and change your gender.

IV Apart from owning your photos, the more pressing issue is that the apps terms are a legally binding contract.

According to section 15 of the contract, users are prohibited from taking legal action against the Russian company.

If you want to opt-out of this agreement, you may do so up to 30 days from registration. Unfortunately, if youve had the app for over a month, its too late to back out.

V Section 17 of the agreement is another problem area as it allows the company to change its terms anytime it wants.

They MAY notify users about changes but have no obligation to. This means theres no stopping the company from charging you for the app without warning.

VI Section 10 of the terms prevents any of the companys employees from being held accountable for any damages you may incur while using the app.

In other words, if you suffer from humiliation and a damaged reputation from the company using your photos, they cannot be sued.

I A special kind of band-aid inspired by how human embryos heal from wounds has recently been invented. It is a jelly-like dressing that responds to the heat of the skin by contracting and pushing the wounds edges closer together.

Through this process, the wound closes at a much faster rate. The new invention has been tested in mice, and so far, the results are amazing. II If this band-aid proves effective in human trials, it could lead to faster and safer healing for all sorts of wounds.

Even chronic injuries would benefit from this breakthrough. While traditional bandages and gauzes are effective, this new dressing uses nanoparticles that can eliminate microbes.

Unlike traditional bandages, this gelatinous bandage heals wounds more actively. She shared that the study was initially an undergraduate thesis project at Harvard.

Their goal was to design an improved bandage that could expedite wound healing, regardless of its size. The inspiration came from how embryos are able to heal without scarring.

IV The protein responsible for the quick healing of embryos is actin. Thin threads of the protein pull together the edges of the wound, just like a drawstring would a bag, facilitating scar-free and seamless healing.

However, as adults, the healing process is different. Instead of actin, keratinocytes cover our open wounds, but at a slow pace.

V To replicate the embryo healing process, researchers used alginate, a gelatinous material extracted from seaweed. They needed the substance to contract upon contact with heat, so they incorporated a polymer that is temperature-sensitive.

This material shrinks when exposed to temperatures above 32 degrees Celsius. As it shrinks, it draws together the edges of the wound.

VI Apart from alginate and polymer, another component of the wound dressing is chitosan: a sugar molecule found in shellfish. It can infiltrate the gel and the skin and fuse them together.

The three ingredients combined make the dressing 17 times stickier than a Band-Aid. With this bandage, you wont ever need to worry about unwanted peeling and exposure of the wound.

I While giant black holes are pretty common in space, a supermassive one has been found thats 40 billion times larger than the Sun.

The black hole was located right smack in the middle of a humongous galaxy called Holmberg 15A, which can be found in the middle of the galaxy cluster, Abell The gargantuan beast is million light-years away from Earth.

II Found via star movement tracking, this black hole is one of the biggest finds astronomers have made. Early calculations suggested the Holm 15A galaxy is billion times as massive as ours.

However, a more recent and reliable measurement has confirmed its actual mass. III Astronomers made use of axisymmetric Schwarzschild models to examine the galaxy more accurately.

They were able to classify the giant as a supermassive black hole SMBH. While it may be on the larger end of the scale, it pales in comparison to another beast TON which clocks in at 66 billion times larger than the sun, making it the largest SMBH known to humanity.

IV To give you an idea of just how humongous this newly discovered black hole is, at 40 billion solar masses, it can easily swallow our whole solar system and more.

Its Schwarzschild radius also known as its event horizon is believed to measure up to astronomical units AUs.

Again, to give you an idea of how broad that is, Pluto, which is located at the edge of the Solar System, has a distance of The massive discrepancy between the first estimate and the updated one goes to show how challenging it is to use indirect methods of measurement.

This SMBH is four to nine times bigger than expected. VI Researchers speculate that the black hole was formed from a collision of two galaxies that had depleted cores.

However, much is still a mystery, so more research is needed to determine exactly how the colossal beast was formed.

Finding out how such galaxy collisions occur could help scientists locate more SMBHs in the future. Its now been on the Red Planet for seven years, and it has never failed to bring us amazing images.

Curiosity is currently the only active rover on the planet, hanging out mainly in the Gale Crater. Its predecessor, Opportunity, which served NASA for 15 years, was unfortunately swallowed by a storm just this year.

II Fun fact: the little rover was only supposed to go on a two-year mission. However, it brought us so many interesting discoveries that NASA decided to extend its contract indefinitely.

As of yet, Curiosity has traveled 21 kilometers along the Gale Crater. It has also climbed meters of Mount Sharp.

III In , we found out through the little rover that a dried-up streambed was once host to water on Mars. This revelation confirmed that Gale Crater had once been a giant lake and set speculations flying that there could still be water somewhere on the planet.

Considering that Mars was initially thought to be a desert planet, this discovery confirmed by orbiting satellites was a huge deal.

IV Curiosity also discovered that Mars could once have hosted microbes. Chemicals critical to building DNA such as phosphorus, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon, and sulfur were seen in bedrock samples brought to us by Curiosity.

And now that we know Mars once had water, its within the realms of possibility that the Red Planet was once habitable.

V When Curiosity started its journey up Mount Sharp, it discovered the presence of Boron in its rocks. Why is this a huge deal?

Well, back on Earth, boron is created through evaporation. It means that the water present on Mars had temperatures ranging from 0 to 60 degrees Celsius.

These temperatures, as you may have guessed, are life-supporting. VI Heres a more recent discovery: a year ago, our friendly little rover provided us with proof of organic compounds on Mars.

Specimen samples contained dimethylsulfide, thiophene, methanethiol, and 2- and 3-methylthiophenes. These compounds are present in Earths mudstones, meaning the Red Planets composition is similar to Earths.

I John Barber passed away around years ago, but he remains one of the most-studied human bodies of all time.

His name may not sound familiar, but DNA experts know him well as an ancient vampire. Barbers body has a broken collar bone, missing upper front teeth, and an arthritic knee.

He most likely died of tuberculosis. II While his remains dont seem vampiric, for some reason, people during his time believed him to be one.

His family was convinced they were being haunted by his ghost, so they dug his body up years after his death and rearranged it in the way customary for vampire deaths in s New England.

III While John Barbers coffin was discovered in in Griswold, Connecticut, information about his death and unusual burial were brought to light thanks to modern technology.

As the only alleged vampire body ever examined, his remnants are valuable to forensic scientists. His discovery revealed more about the vampire scare that haunted New England in the s and s, particularly in Rhode Island and Connecticut.

IV The vampire scare was actually a disease called consumption, or as it is called today, tuberculosis. As we now know, TB is highly infectious.

Back then, people believed that those who passed away from it had the ability to rise from the grave and spread the disease to the living by draining their blood.

V The practice of burning a TB victims heart was done out of fear and love. People in the early days had no idea how the disease spread and so resorted to desperate measures to stop the plague.

They were convinced the dead would infect the living, despite having crossed to the other side. To stop this from happening, people would dig up the bodies, take out their hearts, and burn them.

VI John Barbers heart was already decomposed when his family dug up his grave four years after his death. As an alternative, his head and limbs were removed and placed over his torso in a skull-and-crossbones formation.

They reburied his body but changed the lid of the coffin to wood. The simple inscription, JB 55, symbolized his initials and age.

I According to the giant impact hypothesis, the moon came to be million years after the solar system was formed.

A Mars-sized planet named Theia crashed into our planet. During the collision, Theia and a part of the Earth melted and combined as one rock that began circling the Earth.

This is the satellite we now know as the moon. II The widely accepted thesis is now being challenged by new findings which suggest that the Moon is actually much older than we initially perceived.

According to scientists from the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy at the University of Cologne, the moon could actually have been formed 50 million years after the formation of the Solar System, not million.

III This new study is critical in learning how old the Earth is. The moon rocks used in this study are incredibly reliable as they have barely changed from the moment of their conception.

Earth rocks, on the other hand, have undergone numerous geological transformations over billions of years; as such, they do not provide reliable information in our quest to determine our planets age.

IV Researchers arrived at this new conclusion by comparing the elements i. When Theia and Earth collided, a cloud made of magma was formed.

The magma cooled and various kinds of rocks were formed. If we can get a hold of more of these rocks, well be able to see a clearer picture of how and when the moon was actually formed.

V Resting on the moon are huge chunks of basaltic and igneous rocks called mares Latin: seas. These rocks were studied to learn how interactions between tungsten, hafnium, and uranium formed the mares.

Studying the lifecycle of hafnium and tungsten led scientists to believe that the moon was solidifying just 50 million years after the formation of the solar system.

VI This new evidence, which was discovered from rocks collected during the Apollo 11 expedition in , is causing much debate among scientists.

Nevertheless, it is pretty impressive that our technology now enables scientists to make precise assessments those of the late 60s just could not.

I Scientists have now designed artificial cells that can react to external signals, just as real cells do. Specifically, these artificial cells will light up when they are exposed to calcium.

With this advancement, humans are now a step closer to applying synthetic biological formations in addressing real-life problems such as pollution.

II As a basal capability, biological cells use calcium to communicate with one another. The ability to replicate this in synthetic cells means we can now form ones that are programmable and easily manipulated.

Its a giant step for biotechnology. For instance, such cells could be designed to detect cancer in the body and harmful metals in the environment, James Hindley, a chemical biologist from Imperial College London, UK, explains.

III To build the cells, Hindleys team used a bunch of small vesicles with edge membranes made of lipids.

These membranes have pores in them for calcium to infiltrate. The vesicles have fluorescent properties that are activated by calcium ions.

While its a far cry from what actual cells are capable of, it does open up the possibility of creating cells that serve a purpose.

IV The great thing about these artificial cells is that the scientists designed them such that their pathways are much shorter and less complex than the real ones found in the environment.

Doing so creates a more efficient pathway capable of delivering the same results. Aside from being less complicated, it also eliminates the unwanted and possibly toxic by-products formed by other pathways.

And of course, less toxicity means a healthier cell. V In an earlier experiment, scientists were able to create another form of artificial cell that was capable of producing its own energy via the process of photosynthesis.

This was possible thanks to a specially designed membrane. With this scientific breakthrough, humans may actually be able to create self-sustaining cells in the near future.

VI In another experiment, scientists developed artificial cells that are so intelligent they fooled actual cells into believing they were real.

Can you imagine a world where synthetic and natural cells harmoniously collaborate with one another?

If this could be done, the possibilities would be immeasurable. I A team of scientists at the University of California, Berkeley invented a tiny robot that can survive being stepped on by a pound person.

The AI is just 10 millimeters long and has strength and resilience like no other. Though, if you think about it, this sounds a lot like a pesky little creature we already know.

II Just like the sneaky little cockroaches that are able to survive even the most vigorous stomping, the tiny robot can withstand being stepped on with considerable force.

The fascinating AI was created using a narrow sheet of polyvinylidene fluoride covered in an elastic polymer. III Unlike cockroaches, this artificial critter is far from nasty.

Its so strong that electrocuting it wont kill it, either. When zapped by a high-voltage wire, its body curls up, straightens back out, and then jumps forward using its front leg.

The bot is also an insanely fast sprinter. It can run up to 20 body lengths per second. IV While minute robots were in existence prior to the roachbot, they have no match for the strength and agility of this newbie.

Old tiny robots are usually built with rigid elements, and as such, move slowly and tend to be clumsy. The one-legged roachbot, on the other hand, is built with flexible parts that make it fast and agile.

V Scientists conducted an experiment to test the roachbots capabilities. They put different weighted object atop it and monitored how fast it could move.

As it turns out, the bot can climb up 7. It can even survive being stomped on by a human foot, which is about a million times heavier than the bot.

VI While the bot has some similarities with the roach, its life goals are much more desirable. The amazing capabilities of this tiny critter make it a perfect ally for search-and-rescue operations.

For instance, in the event of a catastrophic earthquake, bigger devices will prove almost useless in locating life beneath heavy debris.

This is where the roach bot will come in. I For the longest time, we all thought that the Milky Way had a flat disc shape.

However, two recent studies have revealed that the galaxy actually warps and twists around the edges. Researchers from the University of Warsaw, Poland designed a 3D map of the Milky Way with the help of cepheid variable stars young giants that are much brighter than the sun up to 10, better!

II Cepheid variables are stars that emit light pulses at various intervals. Scientists used their light pulses to spot them, mark them on the map, and confirm the shape of the Milky Way.

According to astrophysicist Przemek Mroz and the team, the true shape of our galaxy is far different from what we initially thought.

III With the help of the telescope OGLE Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment , scientists were able to identify more cepheid stars in our galaxy, which in turn helped in identifying its actual shape.

The second study made use of the telescope, which further validates the accuracy of the initial findings.

IV The Milky Way is, in fact, shaped like a spiral. The cepheids follow a curve shaped like an S, depicting a twisted disc.

Over the years, scientists had no other means of understanding the galaxys shape and size apart from measurements of other galaxies.

With the 3D map, astronomers are now able to assess our galaxy with far more accuracy. V According to scientists, it is actually pretty common for galaxies to warp at the edges.

So, what makes this discovery special? Well, unlike other galaxies, the Milky Ways warping involves young stars. Scientists believe that the S-shaped warping is created as the outer disc is pulled by the inner disc.

VI This knowledge allows us to study the universe as a whole. It gives us an idea of how to find other galaxies and dark matter too.

So, while its extremely challenging to map out an entire galaxy without an outside perspective, astronomers are determined to keep going.

The Milky Way is believed to contain around billion stars and billion planets, so we still have a long way to go.

II Merck has conducted tests on 12 people, and so far, the results are impressive. The next step is to conduct the tests on a larger scale.

Once the implant is proven effective and safe, it could be a game-changer in the field of medicine, says Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Bethesda, Maryland.

To test its effectivity, researchers injected the implants underneath the skin of subjects who did not have HIV. The implants remained in place for 12 weeks.

Results showed that the MK levels in the subjects blood were significant enough to prevent infection for up to 12 to 16 months.

So, if this product proves itself effective, it will be a marvelous achievement. Yamasa, a soy sauce company from Japan, supplied Merck with the MK George Hanna, Mercks vice president over at Upper Gwynedd, Pennsylvania, explained that the compound lasts longer in implant form because the fluorine atom present in it delays its degradation.

However, those who already suffer from AIDS need a combination of the compound with other medicines. In a test conducted on HIV patients who took the drug mixture over a period of 24 weeks, results were promising.

The drug has done well in large-scale trials and received a priority review from the FDA in April. If the results of the review are positive, the drug could be available on the market as soon as December of I A recent discovery in the bed of the Baltic Sea has fascinated scientists: a well-preserved and untouched shipwreck that is believed to have sailed during the 15th and 16th centuries AD.

The ancient wreck is in near-perfect condition, allowing archaeologists a glimpse into the oceangoing vessels of the Renaissance period the era of Leonardo da Vinci and Christopher Columbus.

II Archaeologists are yet to determine the exact origin of the ship. For now, its been called Okant Skepp, a Swedish phrase meaning unknown ship.

Rodrigo Pacheco-Ruiz, a maritime archaeologist, said the ship is so well-preserved that its almost as if it only sunk yesterday.

Aside from its main mast being intact, another amazing find was the tender boat; a small vessel used to transport crew on and off the ship.

However, it was only this year a decade later that the ship was finally discovered and by accident, mind you.

The MMT, a marine survey company, was conducting a seafloor survey when the tall ship appeared before their eyes. IV The ship is about meters long, making it just smaller than the Santa Maria, Columbus flagship.

Apart from the tender boat and mast, the ships bowsprit, rigging, and transom also remain intact. Archaeologists believe that this pristine preservation is thanks to the cold, salty, and oxygen-deficient waters of the Baltic Sea.

This environment is almost uninhabitable, meaning theres nothing to destroy the ship. V This sunken ship is a critical discovery in history.

Aside from being almost perfectly preserved, it predates other shipwrecks found in the Baltic Sea, such as Mars and Vasa The Unknown Ship is now classed as the oldest shipwreck ever discovered in the Baltic.

In fact, it is the only ship discovered that came from the Renaissance period. VI Archaeologists are yet to uncover the story behind the Okant Skepp.

In fact, research about the wreck is far from being over. One major question remains: how and why did the ship sink when no significant damage has been found so far?

I For the longest time, our knowledge of black holes has been purely theoretical. The existence of these immense objects was difficult to prove until earlier this year when scientists were finally able to take a picture of one.

II While in-vitro fertilization has been around for decades, a pivotal moment took place as a baby boy with three biological parents was born. The process is called mitochondrial donation the structure of the mothers egg cells is altered so that the mitochondria can be replaced with the donors.

As such, the baby shares the DNA of three people. This wearable device can detect robots through their voices.

The machine captures the voices and uses a Google-developed software called Tensorflow to identify the sound.

If its a human voice, the machine does nothing, but if its a robot, the machine will literally send you chills down your spine.

IV Oxford-based Ai-Da is an emerging artist whose work is making a buzz in the art community. Her artwork varies from sketches and paintings to sculptures.

Her abstract style has earned the adoration of other artists. Some even called her paintings hauntingly beautiful.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about Ai-Da, though, is that shes not human, but a robot. V Because of the movie, RoboCop, many of us have imagined AI cops roaming the streets in the not-too-distant future.

However, did you know that in Dubai, a fully-functioning robot cop is already a member of the police force? His name, if youre wondering, is none other than Robocop.

Among his responsibilities are reporting unattended belongings and reporting dubious vehicle plate numbers. VI If you think Dubais robotic cops are amazing, then wait until we tell you about the latest in sex robots.

Apparently, people are predicting that sex robots will become a common household item by the year And, by , people will be having sex more frequently with robots than with humans.

It is believed that eventually, people will separate their sex lives from their romantic relationships. I With the use of the ever-reliable 3D printer, scientists have been able to create a liquid magnet.

You might be thinking, hasnt science done that already? And youre right, to a certain extent. Scientists did invent ferrofluid, but this new liquid magnet is completely different.

Unlike ferrofluid, this brand new invention is able to keep its magnetic properties despite the lack of an independent magnetic field.

While its pretty amazing, these liquids are categorized as superparamagnets as they cant retain magnetization without an external magnetic field.

Inspired by this, scientists from the University of Massachusetts theorized that perhaps there is a way to make these liquids magnetic permanently, all the while retaining their liquid properties.

III What the scientists came up with is a lot like ferrofluid. The magnetic liquid and ferrofluid are both made of ferromagnetic nanoparticles suspended in a liquid base.

They also both use iron oxide nanoparticles. The difference is that the scientists used 3D printing that allowed them to combine two liquids to form an elastic film that can hold water.

IV The scientists printed one-millimeter droplets and used those for their nanoparticle suspension.

The iron oxide nanoparticles moved toward the surface of the droplets and created a sort of case between them and the oil suspension.

This process is called interfacial jamming. In order to magnetize the droplets, the scientists put them near a magnetic coil. V Through this process, the scientists were able to create permanent liquid magnets.

In the absence of a magnetic field, the particles simultaneously rolled towards one another. When exposed to a magnet, the particles tend to align in one direction.

The nanoparticles also seem to be able to transfer their magnetic property to other free-floating nanoparticles.

VI The permanent magnetic liquid could also amazingly alter its shape, from a tall cylinder to a flat pancake to a perfect sphere. Surprisingly, it could even change into more complicated shapes such as that of an octopus.

Scientists believe that this breakthrough innovation opens a lot of doors, particularly in the fields of robotics and artificial cells.

I Astronomers have discovered two white dwarfs that orbit one another merely 7, light-years away from our planet. While scientists are more used to observing slow-moving orbits, this binary system is breaking every record.

II A white dwarf is basically a dead star. When alive, it was a small star with a size no bigger than ten times the sun. Scientists believe that this is what the sun will turn into once it dies.

Once the suns hydrogen supply diminishes, it will combine helium and carbon, which will make it turn red.

Once the sun runs out of these two elements as well, its outer layers will explode, and expose a bright shiny core: the white dwarf. III The two white dwarfs in the J binary system have recently gone through this very process.

The primary star has a core thats about the same size as our planet. The secondary star may be a little bit bigger, but its density and brightness are much less.

When it orbits between the Earth and the primary star, it blocks it from our view, forming an eclipse. IV So far, astronomers have only detected gravitational waves from greater objects such as black holes and neutron stars.

However, they believe that the binary system is capable of generating such waves in the distant future as they grow closer and closer together about 26 cms every day.

In , years, their orbital period will shorten to just five minutes. V In a matter of decades, the two dwarf stars will detach a bit.

The primary star will accumulate matter from the secondary star and produce an AM Canum Venaticorum star. In the event that the accumulation isnt stable, the two stars will fuse together, forming one star called R Coronae Borealis variable.

VI While we currently do not have the technology to witness this possible ending for the binary system, astronomers believe that we will be able to as soon as LISA Laser Interferometer Space Antenna is completed hopefully by The equipment is said to be capable of detecting gravitational waves.

I Astronomers recently discovered an exoplanet orbiting three suns. These beings are found about From the planets point of view, you will see one sun and two red spots that look like eyes staring back at you from the sky.

It did so by detecting a subtle dimming whenever a planet obstructed a small area of the star. This dimming is also used by scientists to estimate just how big and heavy the planet is.

In , the massive HD Ab was found. It is a lot bigger than the LTT Ab, and has been orbiting one of its three stars for years.

The planet is light-years from Earth. IV The new exoplanet is also 1. It is a whole lot denser than our beloved planet with scientists estimating it to be around 8.

It can be categorized as a rocky planet, just like Mars, Venus, and Earth. However, the possibility of it being habitable is very low. V The planet orbits its stars every 5.

This means its temperature could go as high as degrees Celsius or degrees Fahrenheit. There is a possibility, though, that the planet has an atmosphere somewhat similar to our own.

As a planet, having an atmosphere means that it is prone to changes. These changes may then be studied by scientists to help in determining the planets composition.

VI While our technology today is not yet capable of executing such studies, scientists are hopeful that the James Webb Space Telescope will not disappoint.

The Hubble successor is intended to be launched by , and the LTT Ab is the perfect planet for observation. Its proximity is ideal, and its star is just bright enough to light the planet up.

I Over the past few decades, astronomers have discovered countless planets, but only a few have garnered excitement.

Recently, however, scientists found a new system merely 73 light-years from Earth. Whats so amazing about this? Well, thanks to its proximity, we can likely learn more about it than were able to with distant systems.

Even more exciting than that is the fact that it could have habitable planets. Together, they form one orbital pattern.

III Sadly, these planets are not habitable. The rocky one is nearest to the star and completes its orbit in 3. TOIc is 2. However, it is also way too close to the star to be habitable.

IV The third planet orbits the star for Thus, its cooler temperature may be considered habitable. But, it seems to have a thick atmospheric layer that most likely produces a greenhouse effect.

This makes the planet way too hot for any organism to survive, just like Venus. V However, the planetary system still provides us with lots of opportunities.

The red dwarf is a relatively old star. And since it is so close to our planet, its relatively bright. The proximity of the planets will allow astronomers to study their atmospheres by observing shifts in brightness.

This will allow us to understand how planets are formed. VI It is extremely rare to discover such exoplanets near the Earth. The fact that the red dwarf is a quiet star makes it unique as well.

Studying the system will allow scientists to know where to go looking for other planets. And while TOId is not habitable, it is highly possible for it to have exomoons that are.

I After over a decade of research and planning, stem cell biologist Hiromitsu Nakauchi has finally gotten the green light he needed to accomplish his extremely controversial scientific study.

Many countries have prohibited his experiments, but Japan has officially lifted the ban disallowing human-animal embryo studies.

He has gone to numerous countries in the hope of having his experimental study granted. His goal is to transform the lives of over , patients in need of organ transplants.

III The approval of the Japanese government will allow Nakauchi to proceed to the next step of his research. He will inject human stem cells into mice and rat embryos that were genetically modified so that they cannot produce a pancreas.

The target is for these embryos to form the missing pancreas with help from the human cells. If successful, the researcher will seek approval to try the process on pigs next.

IV The biggest concern about the delicate experiment is the type of cells these human stem cells could grow into once they are inside the animal embryos.

As such, one of the governments caveats is that in the event that Nakauchi identifies that over 30 percent of the rodent brain is composed of human cells, the experiment will be put to a halt.

V Previously, Nakauchi and his team at Stanford were able to develop the very first human-sheep embryo. They destroyed the hybrid 28 days after its conception.

Nakauchi explained that the embryo only had a very small percentage of human cells present in the body about 1 in 10, VI While many ethical concerns arise from the approval of the experiment, Nakauchis study has been designed to ensure that the human cells will only help in the generation of targeted organs.

They are percent opposed to having these cells assimilate with other organs of the animals bodies. I When somebodys liver is barely or no longer functioning, there is only one medical option to keep the person alive: organ transplant.

However, a recent discovery has the medical field positive that a safer and less invasive alternative may be possible. Scientists discovered a certain kind of liver cell that has similarities to a stem cell.

II The hepatobiliary hybrid progenitor cell, or HHyP, present in the human liver, is a cell that has a resemblance to progenitor cells. Tamir Rashid, a hepatologist from Kings College London, explains that this discovery means that in the future, the cell could possibly reconstruct damaged livers.

With this groundbreaking finding, there might no longer be a need for liver donors and transplants.

III Progenitor cells are similar to stem cells, but they are different in the sense that they have the capacity to separate themselves from other types of cells.

Unlike stem cells, progenitor cells are limited to a certain amount of regenerations. They can also only produce certain types of cells.

These cells are found to help restore liver function. Additionally, these cells work as each others back-up in the case of impairment.

Ryan Theriot has every reason to celebrate as he scored the game-winning run in a tough game between LSU and the Stanford Cardinal.

They were rallying a three-point deficit before Theriot pulled off the game winner to edge them ahead at the Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha.

This photograph features former American football quarterback, Vince Young, the man of the hour. On January 4, , Vince Young helped his team rally against their opponents, ultimately sealing the deal with a game-winning touchdown.

He threw yards, valiantly ran for more. His game winner was listed at number five in an ESPN compilation of the top plays in college football history.

Beamon is well-known for what he would accomplish on this day in Mexico City. He set the world record for long jump of 8.

Roger Staubach is photographed in a jump of glee as the Navy wins against Maryland in a game played on Nov. The shot was apparently taken during the waning seconds of the game where the result had been a foregone conclusion.

Annapolis, Nov. This would break the record for most home runs previously set by the legendary Babe Ruth. This record was unbroken for 33 years until Barry Bonds upped the ante in Ron Turcotte began his career as a hot walker, but he would soon win races, and become an apprentice in thoroughbred racing.

He rose to prominence with his triumph aboard Tom Rolfe. This photograph of him was taken on June 9, in a race at the Belmont Stakes that would make him internationally famous.

Ron Turcotte is featured riding Secretariat, a combination that would result in a phenomenal finish. This is a photograph of the Fog Bowl which, in American football, was a playoff game between the Chicago Bears and the Philadelphia Eagles.

The latter did very well that day until the second quarter of the game where they could no longer see the crowd, nor the first-down markers.

The visibility was so low, nobody was getting to the end zone because of the dense fog, as featured in this picture.

Referee, Jack Vaughn, can be seen here trying to pierce his vision over Soldier field, tracing the projectile of the ball after an attempt by Eagles placekicker, Luis Zendejas, to score.

The Boston Celtics only needed to inbound the ball and let the final five seconds play out to secure a win over the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference Finals on April 5, However, Bill Russell would cause turnover after passing a ball that struck a wire, giving the 76ers a final opportunity to win it.

Havlicek pulled a trick out of his sleeve as he guarded Chet Walker. He spun around and leaped at the exact moment the ball was thrown inbounds, tipping it to his teammate, which secured a Boston victory.

The Celtics went on to beat the Lakers in the Finals. It had withstood generations of baseball players without being threatened.

His record for playing consecutive games is 2,, and it remained untouched for 56 years. Then came Cal Ripken Jr. This photograph captures the physicality of basketball as Casey Sanders of Duke tries to block Julius Peppers on his way to the basket.

But Peppers is not new to rough plays, as he is also an American football defensive end. It may even be said that the latter thrives in such an environment.

Taken on March 4, , at the Dean E. After their defeat, Julius Peppers would quit basketball to focus on his football career. Just watching him train, winding up for a right-handed pitch can be entertaining enough.

Marichal is known for his pinpoint accuracy. However, it is his high leg kicks, perhaps the highest in Major League history, that immediately distinguishes him from his peers.

This picture was taken on March 8, , where Marichal was warming up for Spring Training. He played for the San Francisco Giants for thirteen years.

By simply judging this photograph, one would not know that Jackie Joyner-Kersee used to suffer severe asthma. But her discipline and dedication as a track and field athlete would help her overcome this and many other obstacles.

She is ranked among the greatest athletes in long jump and heptathlon. There were many rumors at the time linking her to supposed illegal substance use, but investigations would never prove any such claims.

Before Ethiopian marathon runner, Abebe Bikila, started his athletic career, he first joined the Ethiopian Imperial Guard, and rose to the rank of captain.

It was part of his regular exercise to run 20km a day through the Sululta Hills, and he was subsequently trained for the marathon by a Swedish coach who was the first to spot his potential.

Abebe Bikila runs barefoot in this photograph as he crosses the Arch of Constantine. With a time of Such competitions are held at night to avoid the sweltering heat of the daylight hours.

Spaniard professional basketball player, Pau Gasol, found himself at the tail end of a basketball rivalry that spanned decades.

This picture was shot during Game seven of the NBA Finals, where the Lakers won against the Celtics, and Pau Gasol was an instrumental figure in that game scoring 19 points, and grabbing 18 rebounds.

Here, he celebrates as he finds himself at the successful end against their long-time rivals. Tiki Gelana was the long-distance runner to beat during the London Olympics.

She had trained as hard as she could to give honor to her country, and prior to London, she had won the Amsterdam Marathon, then the Rotterdam Marathon after that.

Not far behind her is Priscah Jeptoo of Kenya, like a shadow that pushes, instead of just follows. This photograph shows Priscah pausing for a prayer in the middle of the path after she finishes second to Tiki Gelana.

It was a hard-fought marathon and both have each other to thank for their optimal performances. In the heat of the season, the Butler star was named Player of the Year, averaging This was the time when his skills would be put to the extreme test as they had last possession of the ball, trailing He was able to shoot the ball from half court before the shot clock went off, and it looked like it was going to go in up until the last second where it hit the backboard and rim then, to the dismay of their fans, bounced away.

Austrian weightlifting champion, Matthias Steiner, only had a nick of time to adjust himself before about pounds of sheer force would fall brusquely on his neck.

Luckily, Steiner was all right, but he begged to discontinue. He had won the gold medal during the Summer Olympics and was likely confident or at least hopeful of another win.

After retiring from the game, he returned to coach for the Miami Marlins for a single season. Featured is a beautiful photograph taken on Nov.

The Hokies remain undefeated after they clash with the Eagles in the twilight. However, in the following year, they would lose for the very first time to Florida State during the Sugar Bowl.

Homes had 79 catches, and 1, receiving yards, and this photograph shows him plowing through enemy defenses before he leaps for a touchdown grab with 42 seconds remaining.

In a brusque turn of events, this would be his last year with the team, and he would be traded due to his legal troubles.

His game-winner gave the Steelers the edge over the Cardinals. Lorenzo Charles may not have flourished as an NBA player, where he played as a small forward for the Atlanta Hawks, and then traveled abroad to play for several European teams; but he did have a stellar college basketball career with North Carolina State University.

Imagine playing against a young Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler in the same team, for Charles would valiantly find a way for his team to rally against the heavily favored Houston Cougars.

He scored the last eight points of the game, including an alley-oop in the final seconds to eke out a win, as memorialized in this photograph, showing Charles celebrating with coach, Jim Valvano.

This picture perfectly captures the danger and excitement involved in any rodeo event; from being stomped on by a beast, to falling in awkward postures resulting in broken bones and other such injuries.

Riding on this momentum, Abel Kirui, won a silver medal in the London Olympics. Such is the occasion captured in this picture as he and Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich pass through the Leadenhall Market, trailed by Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda.

By the time he retired, Wayne Gretzky broke almost all major records in the league as well. He played for 20 seasons and finished his career with a total of goals.

When Randy McMichael was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the NFL Draft, like most rookies turning pro, he was just bursting with energy and ready to prove his worth in the big league.

Here, he is photographed flying above the competition to score a touchdown. This was taken on April 15, when they played the Saints during the preseason.

McMichael started all 16 games where he caught 39 passes for yards. The Dolphins released him in He was later cut by the Chargers in Baseball outfielder, Kirk Gibson, spent most of his career with the Detroit Tigers.

He only spent one year in college baseball, where he managed to record stellar numbers, and turned professional in It is noteworthy that he was also drafted to play for pro-football, but he chose to focus on the former.

Kirk Gibson stayed with the Tigers during his first eight years in MLB, and was traded elsewhere in the following years. This photograph was when he returned with the Tigers for his last two seasons.

Taken on Aug. Stovall played consistently all throughout his first year in college and finished with 18 catches for the year, including three touchdowns.

He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Former pro-baseball outfielder, Manny Ramirez, was not one to shy away from tough competition.

In fact, he certainly likes to show up when the going gets tough, as is shown in this photo; diving into second base after he doubles.

Manny Ramirez has played for 19 seasons with various teams. His career spanned 17 seasons, and through those years he has deemed the most durable player after setting the record for most games played 2, Not only was Lou Gehrig consistent, but he was also a powerful hitter, too.

Ella Julius October 03, Zoe Karbe October 03, Michelle Muller October 02, II In , the AKC, who organizes rules and regulations for all dog competitions, established the category of Agility.

It was the first establishment of a new sport since Obedience in The organization aims for affordable microchipping, so all dogs can find their way home.

V also brought the launch of the AKC Canine Health Foundation, which offers resources and research designed to keep domesticated dogs healthy. Their discoveries have helped to expand knowledge about dogs and their owners, and what both parties need to stay healthy.

In , the AKC established the Canine Good Citizen program, which allows dog owners to partake in a training course that enhances the owner-pet relationship.

II AKCs training program should be taken seriously. In , the organization was overseeing more than 15, nationwide events where almost 2 million dogs were competing for recognition and prizes.

The new process allowed the organization to track an animals parentage and confirm the pureness of their breed. IV Beyond recognizing dogs at competitions, AKC also wanted to award dogs who were doing great things outside of sports.

In , the organization established the AKC Awards for Canine Excellence, which were given to pups who performed some sort of extraordinary service.

V While the AKC was recognizing extraordinary dogs, it also turned its attention to extraordinary owners.

In , the organization gave out the first Breeder of the Year Award, which is given to an outstanding purebred dog breeder. VI The Breeder of the Year award considers the health, temperament, and quality of the animals that come from one specific breeder.

The new system offers a training process and application to become a handler, which then allows owners to find handlers that will show their dogs much more easily.

The new law included households with pets in emergency-preparedness planning. They supported an anti-dog fighting legislation in Georgia that made dogfighting a felony.

People couldnt own a dog for fighting, bet on dog fights, or host dog fights on their property. IV The same law passed in Georgia also carried consequences for watching a dogfight.

If someone was caught one time, it was considered a misdemeanor. But if they were caught again, they would be charged with a felony.

This fund supports the health and happiness of dogs through a variety of grants and scholarships. Spurling Scholarship, offers tuition assistance to students whose courses contribute to canine health in some way.

I In , the American Kennel Club AKC branched out from their normal purebred dog competitions slightly by allowing mixed-breed dog owners to enter their canine in certain competition events.

Owners could show their dogs in Rally, Agility, and Obedience events. The title was awarded to animals who continued to support the well-being of others in a notable manner.

Helpline in The service allows owners to call in and receive immediate advice about training their new puppy. IV Continuing in their service of domestic animals, the AKC established Pet Disaster Relief in , a program that takes trailers to the site of natural disasters and provides a temporary home for abandoned animals.

The site allows owners to find trusted breeders, groomers, and trainers that will set their dog up for success through the course of its life. T program in The initiative allows breeders to enroll of their own accord.

They must then meet AKCs standards for happy, healthy puppies. The program then allows owners to shop for dogs from a variety of trusted breeders. I While dogfighting is illegal today, the cruel sport has been around for a long time.

Historians can trace the practice all the way back to 43 A. II After the Romans were exposed to Britain's dogs, they started to incorporate the animals into their gladiator fights.

Dogs would be sent out as entertainment, often fighting large animals like elephants. III In the 12th century, England started their own version of dog fights by releasing dogs into a ring with bulls or bears.

The practice was considered an enjoyable form of entertainment among the English nobility. IV In , the British Government outlawed the practice of dogs fighting against bulls and bears.

Fears regarding animal cruelty plagued the sport but committed dog fights found their way around the way by pitting dogs against each other.

V Fighting dogs were specifically bred to be agile, fast and ferocious, so they could find success in the fighting ring. VI Many fighting dogs were crossbred with numerous breeds as owners tried to find the ideal combination that would result in the vicious animal they wanted.

I Dogfighting, a cruel and inhumane sport, first appeared in the United States around the time of the Civil War.

People would bet on the fights, transforming the practice into a widely recognized form of entertainment. II By the s, most governments recognized the inhumanity of dog fighting.

It was banned across the United States, but it continued to thrive in illegal markets. III Today, dogfighting is outlawed in most of the world, though Japan and Russia still allow this cruel practice to take place.

Even if it is illegal, dog fights still take place all around the world, though theyre usually held in secret. IV Some experts have estimated that around 40, people are still involved in the dog fighting industry within the United States.

Much like the ancient Roman colosseum battles, the participants relish the violent and brutal nature of the dog fights.

V Pit bulls earned their bad reputation primarily because theyre considered to be the perfect breed for dogfighting.

While the dogs themselves arent inherently violent, they can turn into fierce opponents when confronted with violence. VI While some rescued fighting dogs are kept in shelters, many of them are beyond saving.

Theyve been bred to attack other dogs, and they dont often overcome these violent tendencies. I Dogs have been human companions as far back as historians can remember.

Over 15, years ago, prehistoric humans began taming wolves for use both as companions and as helper dogs that assisted in specific tasks.

II While these original companions certainly served a unique purpose, they were nothing like the service dogs of today. The earliest reference to a service dog is a first century A.

III It wasnt until the s that guide dogs became truly useful. During that time a Paris hospital instructed guide dogs in order to help with their blind patients.

IV After World War I, guide dogs were used, particularly in Germany, to assist the many soldiers left blind due to mustard gas. V A doctor named Gerhard Stalling first implemented the widespread use of guide dogs after he noticed that his own German Shepherd developed an attachment to a blind patient.

The Potsdam-based training school produced over 4, guide dogs in the next eight years, many of which were given to veterans.

I Although guide dogs are widely used today, they first came to America in after wealthy American Dorothy Harrison Eustis touted their many benefits for the visually impaired.

II A blind year-old from Tennessee named Morris Frank asked Dorothy to train him in using a guide dog so that he would no longer have to be dependent on his friends and family for help.

Morris flew out to Switzerland a year later and returned with his guide dog, Buddy. The school opened in IV While guide dogs were originally used only to help the blind, their services have expanded over the years.

Dog can now assist people afflicted with a range of ailments, including epilepsy, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. V International Assistance Dog Week was established in , in order to recognize the animals that help to care for humans.

The week aims to raise awareness about the benefits of assistance dogs while simultaneously honoring the many dogs who already exist.

VI In the United States alone, there are over , service dogs assisting people in need. I While dogs may be your best friend, for some people theyre so much more.

For people afflicted with diabetes, a service dog may save their life. Trained dogs can alert their master of a hypoglycemic episode and even remind them to take their insulin on time.

II Other dogs can even assist with post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD by alerting their owner of potential triggers, interrupting the episode as it happens, guiding their owner to a safe place in case of a panic attack, and even calling the correct parties should an attack get out of hand.

III Beyond the actual actions a dog may take to help, the companionship of another living being is sometimes enough to fight against the negative effects of PTSD.

IV Those suffering with severe anxiety may benefit from a psychiatric service dog. These dogs can bring you medication, or even provide physical or emotional stimulation that can keep you from giving in to a panic attack.

V Emotional support dogs are different than psychiatric service dogs. Emotional support dogs assist humans by providing a therapeutic presence, while psychiatric support dogs perform tasks to alleviate the symptoms of anxiety or other mental illnesses.

VI While service dogs seem like a pet, they serve a much more specific purpose. Dogs that have lived strictly as pets already cant often be trained as a service dog, since they wont learn the tasks completely correctly.

I While service dogs are increasingly common, you must meet a variety of criteria before you can classify your dog as an assistance animal.

You must have a physical disability, the ability to participate in the dogs training process, the ability to care for an animal, and a stable home.

II Only a small amount of people with a mental health disorder meet the necessary criteria to get a psychiatric service dog. III In order to get a psychiatric service dog, you must also have a recommendation from a licensed medical professional authorized to give out such a form.

IV Psychiatric service dogs are difficult to obtain because they provide necessary services that keeps their owner from hurting themselves while going about their day-to-day lives.

V Each service animal is trained in the specific needs of its owner. If an owner requires medication, the dog will learn to bring the correct bottle.

If an owner is prone to anxiety attacks, the dog may lean to apply pressure to their chest of abdomen to calm them down. VI Service dogs are not strictly considered a pet.

Although they develop a bond with their owner, their relationship is different to that of a normal domesticated animal. I Therapy dogs have been growing in popularity over the years.

Unlike a service dog, these animals are generally considered to be a pet and are treated as such, where service dogs must be treated a certain way while theyre working.

II Therapy dogs provide comfort and affection to people in need. They have some public access rights, but their rights are not as extensive as those of a typical service animal.

III Although therapy dogs are less rigorously monitored than service dogs, they do undergo some testing to ensure that theyre fit for the classification.

They must be comfortable around a variety of different people and must be equipped to block outside distractions.

IV A therapy dog must be able to quickly adjust to loud noises and sudden movements. Their charges are not always stable, and an easily scared animal will provide little support for someone struggling emotionally.

V Golden retrievers and Labradors are commonly used as therapy dogs, primarily for their generally calm and collected demeanour and friendly nature.

VI Animal-assisted therapy has been used for a long time, and therapy dogs are not a well-accepted form of treatment, particularly for emotional and mental issues.

I Dogs might be your companion of choice, but one family in Japan owns a pet penguin. Lovingly named La La, the penguin goes on a daily jaunt to the local market where fisherman fill his own personal backpack with the catch of the day.

II A cat says meow, but only to humans. Research has shown that cats will rarely meow at each other and instead exclusively use this sound to communicate with human beings.

III While dog can certainly crave sweet foods, cats quite literally have no taste for it. Scientists have found that a key taste receptor in cats is mutated, so they never crave sweet flavors.

IV When a cat is stalking its prey, it maintains a level head. Dogs and humans bound up and down while they pursue an opponent, but a cat keeps their head in one position.

V When your cat hacks up a hairball, the technical term for the resulting soppy ball is a bezoar. VI Like a school of fish, a group of cats also has a name.

Many cats traveling together are referred to as a clowder. I Ever wondered why cats get stuck in trees? While its easy for an agile cat to claw its way up a tree, the front-facing claws dont allow the cat to return to the ground headfirst.

If the cat were to get down, it would have to descend backwards. II Although cats tend to be very quiet, they can actually make around different sounds.

Meowing isnt the only thing their voice box is good for. III There are plenty of cat people in the world. Research estimates that there are around million cats in domestic environments spanning about 40 different breeds.

IV Ancient Egyptians are often credited with being the first people to use cats as domestic companions.

However, the first domestic cat was found in a tomb on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, nearly 4, years before the Egyptian depiction of the animals.

His followers responded to his statements by killing and burning thousands of cats to rid the world of their wickedness.

VI When all the cats were burned, the rat population exploded. Without cats to hunt them down, rats contributed greatly to the massive spread of the Black Death.

I Cats have often been considered evil throughout history. In the Middle Ages, cats were tied to witchcraft. They were often burned or thrown from buildings to celebrate religious holidays.

II A French feline named Felicette was the first cat in space. In , the country launched her into the atmosphere with electrodes implanted in her brain.

She saw space and managed to survive, returning home a short while later. III A cats bark isnt worse than its bite.

Research estimates that around 40, are bitten by cats annually. IV In North America, there are more cat people than dog people.

VI A dogs hearing is good, but a cats hearing is better. A cat can hear sounds up to two octaves higher than the normal range for humans.

I Cats can run up to 31 miles per hour, though they can only maintain the speed for a short distance. II A cat distributes its scent through its tail, paws, and face.

When a cat is rubbing up against you, theyre marking their territory by distributing their scent around you.

The family would shave their eyebrows, hold an elaborate funeral, and embalm their cat to make a tiny mummy that was then buried in the family tomb.

IV Over , mummified cats were found in an Egyptian cemetery in It was like Stephen Kings Pet Sematary come to life! V Although cats often deliver between one and nine kittens per litter, the largest litter on record produced 19 cats, only 15 of which survived.

VI If you smuggled a cat out of Ancient Egypt, the penalty was death. Despite the punishment, cat smuggling became a lucrative business around Egypt and Ancient Greece.

I Dogs may be a mans best friend, but cats bear more similarities. Research has found regions in feline brains that directly mimic sections of the human brain responsible for emotions.

II Cats were more than just a pet in Ancient Egypt. ISO is the cameras sensitivity to light. These three elements can determine how light or dark a photo ends up.

V Take note of your lighting, the direction it is coming from, and its quality. Make sure not to take photos of your subject with the light behind them, especially outdoors unless you are planning to take a picture of a silhouette.

Pay attention to how the light affects your subject. Check if the lighting is enough. If it is not, use your flash or go to a place with better lighting.

VI There is an amazing trick you can use to remove other people, such as tourists, from your travel photos.

What you need to do is to set your camera on a tripod and take a picture every 10 seconds or so until you have about 15 photos.

Choose Median from the dropdown menu. After which, select all the photos. What Photoshop does is it locates the differences in the photos and remove them.

Viewers can interact by chatting and subscribing to the streamers. There is also a feature wherein viewers can chat with streamers and other watchers.

VI Vimeo is a video sharing website which hosts high-definition videos. It was launched in by a group of filmmakers. Vimeo allows its users to upload videos and customize them to a high degree.

The website hosts creative videos featuring animations, films, music, and other works of art in high-definition. I When it comes to scrap paper, newspapers, and magazines, you can either throw them away or turn them into something beautiful and usable.

Here are several ideas on what you can create. You can weave a fruit basket. There are numerous tutorials online which can teach you how to do this.

One way would be by cutting newspaper strips lengthwise, with a width of about three inches. Roll the strips tightly at an angle of 45 degrees.

Secure the end and edges using glue. Weave the rolls into a basket and use glue to secure your creation. You can also weave the newspaper rolls into a bowl or a vase.

II Create beautiful flowers using newspapers and magazines. You can make large or small flowers. One of the easiest flowers to make is a rose.

The first step is to cut a circle. Next, cut a spiral shape from the circle. Roll the spiral from the edge towards the center.

Glue the swirl at the base so that it will not get loose. You can choose to glue the flower to a stick or floral wire and attach paper leaves. III Handmade paper beads can be utilized in assorted ways.

You can create jewelry like bracelets and necklaces with them, or even place them on a long string to make a curtain. Begin by cutting the newspaper into long triangles.

Using a stick or dowel, roll the triangle starting from the wider end towards the tip. Dab some glue on the paper to secure it.

You can craft as many of these beads as you need to make your accessory. IV If you like buying cola, then you probably find yourself regularly stocked up on empty bottles.

There are a lot of ways you can put these to use; one of which is by turning them into vases. To do this, cut the bottom part of a liter bottle, paint it, and fill it with soil and seeds.

If you have lots of bottles, try making a vertical hanging garden. Youll need a rope or wire for this. Turn your bottle sideways. Puncture a hole passing through the top and bottom of the bottle.

Do this for the left and right sides of the bottle. Cut an opening at the upper middle portion of the bottle so that you can place your plant inside it.

Pass a rope or a wire through the holes and tie a knot at the end of each rope to secure it. Make sure to punch a small hole at the bottom of the bottle for irrigation.

V Water and soda bottles can be reused as organizers. Measure how high youll want your organizer to be. Cut the bottom part.

You can use a clothes iron to curl the portion you have cut. Place the iron at the opening of your organizer for about three to five seconds.

You can decorate your organizers by painting them or covering them with colored paper. The organizers can be used for things like makeup brushes, jewelry, and colored pencils.

VI You can use several liter bottles to create an ottoman. Youll need cleaned bottles which have roughly the same height, tape, cardboard, foam, and fabric.

Arrange the clean bottles into a circle. Make sure the caps are intact. Cut two cardboard circles matching the diameter of the group of bottles.

Place one circle on top and the other on the bottom of the bottles. Secure everything using tape or hot glue. Cover the sides with rectangular foam and the bases with circular foam.

Secure the foam. Measure and then sew a cover for the ottoman using your chosen fabric. This game can be played in singles with one player per side or doubles with two players per team.

Formal competitions are performed on a standard rectangular indoor court while casual games can be played on any flat surface area or at the beach.

II To achieve high speed and perfect return, hit the shuttle at the top of its arc. Make sure to return the shuttle before it gets close to your body to prevent losing its momentum and height.

Hitting back the shuttle at the right moment will give you ample time to prepare for your opponent's next move.

III After returning the shuttle, always position yourself back in the middle of the court. Standing in the middle of the court while moving your feet and preparing for the next move of your opponent will give you the upper hand during the game.

IV Placing the shuttle toward the backline is a good technique to catch your opponent off guard. Practice perfecting your precision and applying the right amount of strength for an excellent backcourt shot.

This will help you avoid committing a fault or out of bounds penalty. V The squat jump is a good exercise to help you achieve a perfect jump shot.

To do it effectively, place your hands at the back, bend your knees and jump as high as you can. This exercise will also boost your core and lower body strength.

VI A short serve is one of a number of serving techniques used in badminton. It is a tricky shot that can catch your opponent off guard.

To do the short serve, drop the shuttle closer to the racket and hit it with only enough force to avoid a fault penalty.

I The Olympic beach volleyball court measures 16 x 8 meters, and the net must be at the height of 2. Many public beach areas have available nets set up for volleyball games.

You can also find sand courts at parks and other recreational areas. II The objective of playing beach volleyball is to make the ball touch the sand on the opposing teams side while preventing the ball from hitting the sand on your team's side of the court.

This is a battle of endurance, and outsmarting your opponents is a necessity if you wish to win the game. III One of the rules for playing beach volleyball is that both teams are allowed to touch the ball three times before it goes back to the opponent's side.

Players are also permitted to block a service coming from the opponent's hand. IV Passing is a necessary skill needed to play beach volleyball.

The forearm pass is where a teammate receives the ball with their forearms, while the overhand throw is done by instantly hitting the ball over the net.

A pass is also a method of securing the ball from the opponent's attack. V To set the ball, you have to hit the ball into the air in such a way that you or a teammate can perform a hit or an overhand attack.

You can carry out this type of movement in the same way in which an overhand pass is generally carried out, with a targeted strike in an arm-over-head position.

VI Maintaining a perfect height and position of the ball is one of the critical factors in gaining an advantage in beach volleyball.

Setting the ball is a move that allows your teammate to hit the ball precisely where you want it to land on the opponent's side. I An ideal picnic should take place somewhere lovely, like a park, lakeside, or somewhere with a scenic view.

Preferably, you should also look for a place that offers established picnic areas where you can use grills, restrooms, and tables.
